Guardiola rubbishes prospect of signing replacement for injured Bravo

The Catalan manager insists the club will not sign a free agent to replace the Chile international, who may be out for the season

Pep Guardiola has confirmed that Manchester City will not sign a replacement for Claudio Bravo following the goalkeeper’s injury.

Goal understands that City fear Bravo could miss the entirety of the season due to a ruptured Achilles, leaving Ederson as the club’s only senior stopper.

Joe Hart and Angus Gunn were allowed to leave the club during the summer, joining Burnley and Southampton respectively, leaving City thin on goalkeeping reinforcements.

City recalled Montenegro Under-21 international Aro Muric from a season-long loan deal with NAC Breda to cover for Bravo’s absence and, despite suggestions that the club could recruit a free agent, such as former Liverpool ‘keeper Diego Cavalieri, Guardiola says they will stick with what they have, including 20-year-old Daniel Grimshaw.

“No, from then beginning it was Aro, Aro,” he told a press conference.

“He was the option. We know him. Last season he trained with us all year. We loaned him because you know the second team isn’t a real competition and that’s why we want to see him every weekend play and play.

“Unfortunately with Claudio the first option was [for Muric] to come back because the window is closed. We have Aro and Grimshaw. They will be our three goalkeepers.”

City have been in excellent form thus far this season, beating Arsenal 2-0 in their opening game before thumping Huddersfield Town 6-1.

And the defence of their Premier League crown continues on Saturday as they travel to Molineux to take on newly-promoted Wolves.
