Monaco’s €20m forward Willem Geubbels on the move again?

According to Sebastien Denis of Foot Mercato, Monaco forward Willem Geubbels may be on the move this transfer window. On the brink of departure last summer, Geubbels ultimately stayed with Les Monégasques but has not yet featured for them this season. Is the grass greener elsewhere?

Loaned to FC Nantes for 2021/22, he did not appear in their French Cup final win last May, but still has a winner’s medal. If he wishes to taste future glories such as this, he may seek a transfer to get more playing time. With his contract at its end next June, it appears the 21-year-old winger is destined to leave this January, with Dutch, Belgian, and Swiss clubs interested in acquiring his signature.

Previously likened to Kylian Mbappé, the young forward has yet to meet his potential. Since his entry into French football in 2017, when he became the first player born in the 21st century to appear in Ligue 1, he has struggled to find a first-team place. First, at Lyon, he was both the youngest-ever player and the first player born in the 21st century to play in the Europa League. He moved to Monaco in 2018 for €20m but has yet to live up to the price tag. Having struggled with injuries, his future depends on game time. Since 2017, he has only played in 39 games in the French top flight.

Perhaps the allure of football elsewhere in Europe can be the impetus required to reignite his career.
