The volume of retail sales in February was 0.4 per cent higher than in February 2008, the lowest growth since September 1995, when it rose by 0.2 per cent, reported the ONS, Office for National Statistics.
Between January and February, total sales volume decreased by 1.9 per cent. All sectors showed falls, with the largest decrease in other stores, which fell by 4.8 per cent and is, along with January 1995, the largest fall in the series. Textile, clothing and footwear stores fell by 3.7 per cent.
Retail sales volume in the three months December to February rose by 2.0 per cent compared with the previous three months. This follows recent strength in December and January.
Total sales volume in the three months to February was 3.0 per cent higher than the same period a year ago. Sales in textile, clothing and footwear stores rose at 6.6 per cent, the largest rise since May 2007 when it was 6.9 per cent. Non-specialised stores showed no growth.
The seasonally adjusted value of retail sales for the three months to February was 1.9 per cent higher than in the same period a year earlier and February was 0.4 per cent higher than in February 2008.
