Jean-Claude Juncker: It’s hell
Commission president reacts to Donald Tusk’s comment on Brexiteers.
European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker described his job as “hell” on Wednesday as he weighed into a controversy caused by Donald Tusk.
Earlier, European Council President Tusk said during a press conference alongside Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar: “I’ve been wondering what that special place in hell looks like, for those who promoted Brexit, without even a sketch of a plan how to carry it out safely.”
Theresa May’s spokesman told reporters: “It’s a question for Donald Tusk whether he considers the use of that kind of language to be helpful,” and Sammy Wilson, Brexit spokesman for the Democratic Unionist Party, called Tusk a “devilish, trident-wielding, euro maniac.”
Asked about the remarks during a press conference with Varadkar, Juncker said: “I’m less Catholic than my good friend Donald. He strongly believes in heaven and by opposite in hell. I believe in heaven and I have never seen hell, apart [from] during the time I was doing my job here. It’s a hell.”
