The Commission press room was almost empty Thursday as many reporters were in Luxembourg for a Eurogroup meeting on the Greek bailout.

However, Margaritis Schinas, the Commission’s chief spokesman, had plenty to talk about as Thursday was the deadline for phone companies to adopt EU rules on cutting out roaming charges. Schinas insisted “citizens can count on us to make sure the promise of this legislation will be fulfilled. The Commission is confident but not complacent.”

So excited was the Commission about the end of roaming that Schinas stopped the midday briefing to play a promotional video.

Schinas also said Jean-Claude Juncker had a phone call with Emmanuel Macron ahead of next week’s European Council in Brussels.

The Commission is still unable to confirm a date for the beginning of Brexit talks and did not provide details on ongoing “talks on talks” between EU and British officials that will pave the way for the start of official talks.

“The agenda of a meeting which is on talks about talks is precisely on how to organize talks,” Schinas said.
