Oettinger criticizes Belgian security services after Brussels attacks
Critical comments come ahead of ministers’ meeting.
Ahead of Thursday’s meeting of EU interior and justice ministers in Brussels, European Commissioner Günther Oettinger criticized Belgian security services for “not cooperating sufficiently” with one another.
“We must clearly address the shortcomings of the Belgian security services,” the European Commissioner for Digital Economy and Society told German newspaper Bild. His comments were posted on the daily’s website late Wednesday.
“In Brussels alone there are several different police agencies, which do not cooperate sufficiently,” Oettinger was quoted as saying. “This cannot continue.”
The Commissioner said he expects the EU interior and justice ministers, meeting in the Belgian capital two days after ISIL attacks killed 31 people and injured hundreds of others, to decide on ways to remove barriers in the exchange of information.
