MAUI, HI — A Hawaii woman who went missing after going for a hike over two weeks ago was found alive by rescuers on Friday, according to police and a Facebook page dedicated to the search.
Amanda Eller, 35, was found in the area of Kailua reservoir around 3:45 p.m. local time, according to police. Eller was found by two lead searchers, Chris Berquist and Javier Cantellops, who were conducting a search on a private helicopter that had been hired by Eller’s family, according to The Maui News.
Eller was taken to a local hospital for evaluation. According to the Facebook page committed to the search, Eller, a physical therapist, was “slightly injured” and was air evacuated from the Makawao Forest Reserve. Eller’s mother, Julia Eller, told KHON that her daughter was in surprisingly good shape given what she has been through. Julia Eller said that her daughter used water sources and ate berries and fruits to survive.
The Facebook page said Eller got lost and was stuck in the forest. She was found between two waterfalls, down a deep ravine in a creek bed. According to information on the page, Eller spotted the two rescuers and waved them down.
“I’ve seen that girl every day for the last two weeks about 100 times a day,” Berquist, one of the searchers who found Eller, said, according to the Maui News. “There was no mistake it was her.”
Cantellops, the second searcher, posted photos on his Facebook page of the moment they found Eller in the forest.
“She figured it out, she was smart, she was strong, she was prepared,” John Eller, Amanda Eller’s father, told KITV. “We said that in the beginning and it was absolutely true.”
Eller said that his daughter was trying to find her way back and “just got lost in the terrain.”
The last time Amanda Eller was seen was on May 8. Police had found her white Toyota RAV4 with her phone and wallet inside in the parking lot of the forest reserve, according to KITV.
