GREEN BAY, WI — Terry Lauerman, a 75-year-old man from De Pere, Wis. is known locally as the “Cat Grandpa,” for his volunteer duties at the local Safe Haven Pet Sanctuary in Green Bay.
When the pet sanctuary posted a photo of Lauerman napping on the couch with several of his feline friends this week, the outpouring of interest was so great that it flooded the sanctuary with donations and temporarily broke their website.
“We are so lucky to have a human like Terry,” the shelter said in a Facebook post. “Terry just came along one day and introduced himself. He said he’d like to brush cats. Eventually, it became everyday. He brushes all of the cats, and can tell you about all of their likes and dislikes. He also accidentally falls asleep most days. We don’t mind – Cats need this! Terry is a wonderful volunteer.”
Lauerman, who walked into the animal shelter about six months ago with designs on volunteering to brush cats at the shelter, had his volunteer job morph in to something of a cat nap expert.
His volunteer work was not just valued by the cats he was napping with on the animal shelter’s couch, it was also valued by the staff who work there.
“I’ve always liked cats and I always had cats when I was kid, and I loved them,” he said in a Green Bay Press-Gazette story this week. “In many ways, I see my old cats in these cats here.”
