Competing at the National Collegiate Open in Smyrna, Delaware, both 149-pound Brayton Lee and 197-pound Garrett Joles were crowned champions. Both competing unattached, Lee and Joles gave the Gophers two champions out of two grapplers.
Minnesota was one of only three teams to crown two tournament champions and they did so with the fewest number of competitors.
Joles charged his way through the 197-pound bracket with three bonus point victories, including a 16-4 major decision in the final round over Chasen Blair of North Carolina. Joles outscored his opponents 44-7 in the tournament.
Lee’s five-match run began with a 10-4 decision over Matt Grippi followed by a 20-13 decision over Peter Tedesco. In the Gophers’ dual with Maryland earlier this season, Tommy Thorn also defeated Tedesco.
The Brownsburg, Indiana native advanced to the semifinals with a 22-7 technical fall before earning a spot in the finals with a strong 5-1 decision.
Lee defeated Daxton Gordon of California Baptist University by decision in the final round.
