FARGO, N.D.—No. 21 Iowa State won eight of 10 bouts including a pair of one-point decisions and three bonus point wins in defeating No. 23 North Dakota State 29-7 in a Big 12 Conference dual on Wednesday, Jan. 9, before 792 spectators in the Scheels Center.
NDSU (6-4, 2-3 #Big12WR) is scheduled to host No. 18 Pitt (6-0, 0-0 ACC) at 4 p.m. Jan. 12 in Scheels Center.
Iowa State (3-1, 1-0 #Big12WR) received a pin from No. 4-ranked 197 Willie Miklus and major decisions from 157 Chase Straw and No. 8 149 Jarrett Degen to rack up points, but used Marcus Coleman’s 8-7 decision over Lorenzo De La Riva at 174 and Ryan Leisure’s 8-7 decision over Sawyer Degen at 141 pounds to pull away.
NDSU 165-pounder Andrew Fogarty posted an 11-0 major decision over Logan Schumacher to briefly tie the score at 4-all after two bouts. Fogarty, ranked No. 21 nationally, improved to 11-3 overall and 8-2 in duals.
The Bison and Cyclones split a pair of overtime decisions. NDSU’s No. 8-ranked 125 Brent Fleetwood needed a takedown 18-seconds in the extra period for a 4-2 sudden victory-1 win. Fleetwood stands at 16-3 overall, 8-1 in duals.
In the battle of nationally-ranked wrestlers, Iowa State’s No. 9-ranked 133 Austin Gomez was awarded a takedown 9.3-seconds into the extra period for an 8-6 sudden victory-1 win over No. 18 Cam Sykora (15-4, 7-2). Sykora built a 5-4 lead after two using a 4-point near fall in the top position and extended the lead to 6-4 with an escape in the third. However, Gomez recorded a takedown and held on to force overtime.
