Concordia-Moorhead Wins Eight Straight To Beat St. Olaf
NORTHFIELD, Minn. — Concordia won eight straight individual matches on their way to beating St. Olaf 43-12 and earning their 10th dual meet win of the year.
The Cobbers posted eight consecutive bonus point wins in their match with the Oles. CC is now 10-7 in dual meets while St. Olaf falls to 1-8.
Concordia started the match by forfeiting the bout at 125. They then posted technical fall wins in three of the next five matches to cruise to a 27-6 lead. A pin fall, forfeit and major decision victory finished off the team scoring for the Cobbers as CC turned a 6-0 deficit into a 43-6 lead.
Junior Aaron Dick started off the scoring spree by coming away with a 20-3 technical fall win at 133. The Cobbers took advantage of two uncontested matches at 141 and 149 to jump to a 17-6 lead. Adam Presler won by forfeit at 141 and then Ty Johnson claimed a victory by disqualification at 149.
No.6-ranked Cole Sladek piled on the team points with a 21-6 technical fall at 157 and then Travis Deegan added his own tech fall victory at 165.
Jake Johnson came away with the only pin fall for the Cobbers in the match. Johnson was able to put his opponent’s shoulders on the mat in the second period and won at the 4:45 mark.
Ricky Briggs won by forfeit before Kody Van Den Eykel claimed a win In the only match that went the full 7-minute, 3-period distance of the night. Van Den Eykel outlasted his opponent at 197 and won by a major decision at 8-0.
10 X 4: Concordia has now recorded 10 dual-meet wins in each of the past four seasons. The Cobbers are 53-22 in dual meets over the past four years.
INDIVIDUAL BOUT BANTER: Of Concordia’s eight wins on the night, five were contested on the mat. Of those five, four were decided by point totals. The Cobbers held a 66-9 advantage in those four matches decided by point totals.
PRESLER PUTS UP ANOTHER: Adam Presler’s forfeit win at 141 increased his team-leading win total for the year. Presler is now 22-14 for the season.
NATIONALLY-RANKED NOTES: Cole Sladek is one of only two Cobbers who are ranked in the latest NWCA national rankings which came out on Wednesday. Sladek is No.6 at 157 and lived up to his national ranking by recording a technical fall vs. St. Olaf. Sladek is now 13-1 on the season and has 10 bonus point wins on the year.
WHAT’S NEXT: Concordia will finish off the “regular season” portion of its schedule when they host Division II Southwest Minnesota State on Thursday, Feb. 16 at 7 p.m. The Mustangs are 7-12 on the year and 3-4 in the NSIC. The Cobbers will then host the NCAA West Regional Meet on Saturday, Feb. 25. The Oles take on Luther College on Tuesday, February 14th at home.
