St. Cloud State to wrestle SMSU in Pierz, Minn.

The #2 nationally ranked St. Cloud State University wrestling team (12-1, 4-0 NSIC) will travel to nearby Pierz-Healy High School in Pierz, Minn. for a 7 p.m. match against NSIC rival Southwest Minnesota State University (6-8, 2-2 NSIC). The evening of wrestling at Pierz-Healy High School will open with a high school dual match at 5 p.m. between Pierz Healy H.S. and Cambridge H.S.

The Huskies will then complete their week of NSIC wrestling with a 2 p.m. match at #15 Minnesota State University (8-3, 4-1 NSIC) in downstate Mankato, Minn. on Saturday, Feb. 6.

St. Cloud State Wrestling News and Notes:

  • The St. Cloud State Huskies remained undefeated in the NSIC with a pair of road victories over the weekend. On Jan. 29, the Huskies clocked a 50-0 victory at Minot State and then completed the weekend on Jan. 30 with a 42-3 win at the University of Mary.
  • SCSU currently owns a 12-1, 4-0 NSIC record this season. SCSU has now won 40 consecutive NSIC matches. The last time SCSU lost a conference dual match was an 18-13 setback against Augustana on Jan. 27, 2011.
  • In the latest NCAA Division II national rankings, SCSU earned a number two ranking. In the individual rankings, SCSU’s Tim Prescott is ranked number one in the nation at 125-pounds while Clint Poster (165) and Austin Goergen (285) are also ranked number one in the nation. Clayton Jennissen is ranked fourth in the country at 174-pounds and Jay Hidreth is ranked fifth in DII at 149-pounds.
  • SCSU also sent a group of wrestlers to the annual North Country Open on Jan. 30 at St. John’s. SCSU’s Tim Prescott (125-pounds), Aaron Bates (174-pounds) and Garrett Miller (184-pounds) all gained first place finishes for the Huskies in the tournament.
  • SCSU wrestlers to gain runner-up spots at the North Country Open were Tyler Pasvogel (133-pounds), Matt Nelson (141-pounds), Josh Berg (165-pounds), Vince Dietz (174-pounds), Luke Belich (197-pounds) and Michael Hobbs (285-pounds).
  • Clint Poster leads the Huskies this season with a 27-1 record at 165-pounds, while Austin Goergen is a perfect 25-0 at 285-pounds. Other top records for the Huskies this season include Jay Hildreth with a 22-4 record at 149-pounds, Clayton Jennissen with a 22-5 record at 174-pounds, Brett Velasquez (17-2 at 125-pounds) and V.J. Giulio (15-4 at 197-pounds).
  • SCSU will continue its season on Feb. 4 with a dual match against Southwest Minnesota State at Pierz-Healy High School in nearby Pierz, Minn. The match is slated to begin at 7 p.m.
  • The Huskies will complete their NSIC weekend on Feb. 6 with a 2 p.m. match at Minnesota State University in Mankato, Minn.
  • On the horizon – the Huskies will travel to the 2016 NCAA Division II Super 3 Regional on Feb. 27-28 in Sioux Falls, S.D. at Augustana University’s Elmen Center. This tournament serves as the qualifying round for the NCAA Division II championships, which will be held at on March 11-12 at the Denny Sanford Premier Center in Sioux Falls, S.D.
