SATURDAY NEWS UPDATE
WWE
WWE produced a PSA with SmackDown wrestlers Daniel Bryan, Bianca Belair, Rey Mysterio, and Montez Ford urging people to get their COVID-19 vaccines when eligible.
On Talking Smack, Paul Heyman indirectly referenced Christian signing with AEW and worked it into Roman Reigns’ storyline with Edge: “Your best friend in this world knew he was going to become Roman Reigns’ target just to get into your head. And what did he do? He ran away before Roman Reigns could target him. How many of you [air quotes] Christians need to convert before you realize it’s not smart to piss off Roman Reigns?”
Boxing star Tyson Fury told Behind The Gloves about how the pandemic impacted his plans with WWE: “I was supposed to go to SummerSlam last year and I was supposed to go to WrestleMania last year and then I was also supposed to fight Drew McIntyre in a PPV event in the UK, but none of that happened thanks to COVID. So COVID’s cost me SummerSlam, Royal Rumble, PPV with Drew McIntyre, the [Deontay] Wilder rematch, and the [Anthony] Joshua fight. So thank you COVID [laughs].”
Jeff Hardy spoke to ESPN West Palm about him wrestling in WWE and his brother Matt Hardy wrestling in AEW: “It’s really cool. Matt is in AEW and before the pandemic hit their crowds were just incredibly on fire. It was so exciting watching them. They’re very different than WWE. I don’t know how to explain it but they’re like, more open minded. WWE is kind of set in their ways. “It’s changed many times over the years, especially since the Attitude Era. It’s way different. Thank goodness we don’t hit each other in the head with chairs anymore, because I worry about that. It’s a lot safer now. But for me to be where I am in WWE now and for Matt to be in the other wrestling world, it’s so cool. It’s cool we can go our separate ways and still be successful.”
Stephanie McMahon told Digital Spy about WWE’s efforts to hire more female writers: “Hiring in the writing room is really important because it has previously been a fairly male-dominated writing room and there are big efforts right now to change that. I don’t have the stats off the top of my head. So I’m not sure how many women we’ve hired since we started but I know it’s several, including a senior ranking VP (Christine Lubrano) who’s in charge of many different aspects of making sure that the creative and partnerships and all lines of business are all working together. So there’s been a huge movement. And for both men and women we are always looking to improve our storylines no matter what and improve our character development.”
In an interview with Sports Illustrated, Apollo Crews discussed his recent character change: “It’s only been a couple weeks, but a lot has happened in that amount of time. I have the right character, one that gives me purpose. There is a real history here, too, bringing my Nigerian heritage to our TV. It’s going to be different than anything you see. I am really grateful for this opportunity, and I’m giving people everything to the best of my ability. I can’t wait to see where it goes next.”
Fox Sports interviewed Adam Cole.
WWE’s YouTube channel uploaded Floyd Mayweather vs. Big Show in a no DQ match from WrestleMania XXIV, Becky Lynch & Naomi vs. Natalya & Carmella from Fastlane 2018, and Melina vs. Beth Phoenix in an I Quit match from One Night Stand 2008.
