Today WWE sent out a tweet asking if Roman Reigns was “destined” for another WWE Universal Championship match with Brock Lesnar. To quote the great Sir Alec Guinness, it was “as if millions of voices suddenly cried out in terror, and were suddenly silenced.”
I fear something terrible has happened.
I don’t know what Vince McMahon is trying to accomplish by building up Roman Reigns over and over again, just to lose to Brock Lesnar, over and over again. Their rivalry is the sports entertainment equivalent of the Biblical book of Numbers. Sure, at one point it may have served a purpose, but it’s not helping anyone in 2018 and god is it becoming an absolute chore to sit through. Actually, I take that back. Chores are usually required and yield some kind of benefit when you’re done with them.

They built up Roman for WrestleMania 31, and he lost. They built him back up for SummerSlam last year, and he lost. WrestleMania 34? Guess what – he lost! So the real question is, after four years of this madness, what have they really accomplished?
Roman Reigns has been irreparably damaged. His quest to win the title won’t matter when he finally gets there because one win doesn’t remove a history of losing, and not like he isn’t already a three-time WWE World Heavyweight Champion.
Lesnar was once the most exciting star in the business he’s now basically an overpaid tree trunk whose 400-day championship reign has essentially made the Universal title a really fancy belt buckle. How you can screw up so badly as a storyteller that fans actually want BROCK LESNAR to leave the company is beyond me. Don’t even get me started about Braun Strowman, Samoa Joe and the never-ending revolving door of talent that have been caught up in their collateral damage.
If they absolutely MUST have Roman Reigns be the guy to take the title from Lesnar, fine. It’s a terrible idea at this point, but whatever; I just want this nightmarish roller coaster to be over and behind us forever. The sooner we never see them together again, the better.
But please Vince – I AM BEGGING YOU – just give us a brief window of respite from the madness at Money in the Bank. I’m not just saying this because it’s in my hometown of Chicago and I’ll definitely be in attendance. I just want one, maybe two months where we don’t have to think about Lesnar/Reigns. And to be honest, I don’t want to see any of the usual suspects touch the belt either.
So in that spirit, I’ve put together a list of the seven best options currently on Monday Night RAW to face Brock Lesnar for the WWE Universal Championship at Money in the Bank. Every single name on this list is a fresh challenger to the throne. None of them have ever lost to the “Beast Incarnate”, meaning they probably deserve a shot at the title way more than Reigns, Strowman, Joe, Rollins and everyone else that’s been fed through the revolving door over the past few years.
