Record Mega Millions Jackpot Finally Claimed In South Carolina

The winner of the $1.5 billion jackpot from the October 2018 Mega Millions drawing has finally come forward to claim the record prize.

According to the South Carolina Education Lottery Commission, the winner has chosen to remain anonymous as allowed under state law. The jackpot winner has chosen to collect the money in a one-time cash payment, which is the largest payout to a single winner in U.S. history.

“We are delighted that the winner is a South Carolinian and has come forward to claim this remarkable prize,” Hogan Brown, the commission’s executive director, said in a statement.

The winner will receive $877,784,124 in cash.

Lottery officials said that while the winner was in line to buy a Mega Millions ticket, they let another customer make a purchase before them.

The winning ticket was sold at KC Mart in Simpsonville, located in Greenville County. The store will receive $50,000 for selling the claimed winning ticket and the state will receive $61 million in income taxes.

In addition to the jackpot winner, 36 people won second place $1 million tickets. Eight were in California, four each in Florida and New York, two each in Massachusetts, Michigan, North Carolina, New Jersey and Virginia, and one each in Arizona, the District of Columbia, Iowa, Kentucky, Missouri, New Mexico, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas and Wisconsin.
