High School Lockdown Lifted After Student Shot, Another Arrested

CHARLOTTE, NC — Butler High School in Matthews was in lockdown Monday morning after a student was shot. The student was rushed to an area hospital and the suspected gunman — another student — was taken into custody, according to police.

“We have responded to a shooting at Butler High School this morning,” Matthews Police Department confirmed on their Facebook page. “There is one student that has been shot that was transported to the hospital with unknown injuries at this time. Another student has been taken into custody.

“This is believed to be an isolated incident and the scene has now been secured by police. Information on releasing students to their parents will be coming soon,” MPD said.

Families of Butler High School students were advised through phone calls as school offiicals said no one would be allowed on the school campus until the lockdown is lifted, Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools said in a statement. Around 9:30 a.m., however, the lockdown was lifted. “The campus has been secured; no immediate danger exists,” it said.

WSOC reported that dozens of parents “surged past the police barricades to find their children.”

The school directed parents to pick up children from the entrance of the school campus, and said students would be escorted from the building to meet their families. “Classes will proceed on campus today for students remaining on campus,” CMS said.
