London 2012: USA saved Brazil’s neck. Russia triumphs in the group A

USA won over Turkey not protecting Brazil before elimination. Russia defeated Italy in tie-break and prevailed pool A of the Olympic tournament. Thanks to this victory, Russia will face the fourth team of Group B in the quarter-finals. Turkey, Serbia, Algeria and Great Britain can pack up their luggages and return to their homes.

 

Pool A

Algeria 0 – 3 Dominican Rep.

The Dominican Republic claimed a straight-set (25-15, 25-16, 25-13) over Algeria to advance to the quarterfinals of the Olympic Games women’s volleyball tournament at Earls Court on Sunday.

It was the second victory against three losses for the Dominican side while Algeria concluded the tournament without wins in five outings. The winners held a 10-4 margin in blocks.

As the fourth placed team in Pool A, the Dominicans will play Pool B leaders United States in one of the quarterfinals scheduled on Tuesday.

Prisilla Rivera was the best scorer of Dominican Republic with a match-high 21 points, followed by Milagros Cabral and Gina Mambru with 14 and 12 respectively. Zhora Bensalem finished with 13 points for Algeria.

Great Britain 0 – 3 Japan

Japan beat Great Britain (25-19, 25-14, and 25-12) as the fifth and final round of women’s volleyball preliminary matches took place at Earls Court on Sunday. Japan finish third in the group and progress to the quarterfinals and their opponents will be determined by a drawing of lots upon the conclusion of tonight’s final match. Great Britain are eliminated, but can be proud of their win over Algeria in the competition.

Italy 2 – 3 Russia

Russia beat Italy 3-2 (26-28, 25-19, 22-25, 25-16, 15-11) in the fifth and final round of women’s volleyball pool A preliminary matches at Earls Court on Sunday. Russia finished top of the pool and will play the fourth-placed side in pool B. Italy finished second and will face the side that comes either second or third in pool B, following the drawing of lots after the end of Sunday’s play.

With the teams unbeaten after four matches, this contest pitted the power and height of Russia against the skill and speed of Italy.

Goncharova was the match’s top scorer with 33 points, while Gamova picked up 31. Among Italian players, Simona Gioli scored 21 (16 attack, 5 block, 46% in attack).

Pool B

China 3 – 2 Korea

China edged Korea in five grueling sets (28-26, 22-25, 25-19, 22-25, 15-10) as both teams secured berths in the quarterfinals phase of the Olympic Games women’s volleyball tournament at Earls Court on Sunday.

China finished second in Pool B behind United States with a 3-2 mark and 9 points while Korea collected one valuable point to secure at least a fourth place with their 2-3 win-loss record and 8 points.

Hui Ruoqi led five Chinese players with double digits in the scores with 20 points, followed by Chu Jinling who finished with 14. Yang Junjing and Ma Yunwen each contributed 12 tallies and Zhang Lei added 12.

Korea’s Kim Yeon-Koung registered a match-high 32 points, including three blocks and two aces, and Han Song-Yi added 16. Yang Hyo-Jin and Kim Hee-Jin tallied 14 and 13 respectively with Yang totaling five blocks.

The winners edged the defeated side in blocks (13-12) and service aces (7-6).

USA – Turkey 3 – 0

Top scorers: D. Hooker 19, F. Akinradewo 14, C. Harmotto 9; N. Ozsoy 14, N. Darnel 11, B. Cansu 9

World No. 1 United States completed a perfect tour around the preliminary round of the Olympic women’s volleyball tournament by defeating Turkey in straight sets (27-25, 25-16, 25-19) to finish atop of Pool B with a 5-0 win-loss record on Sunday.

The winners held an 11-6 margin in the blocking category and committed only nine unforced errors for the whole match to 18 by the Turkish team.

Destinee Hooker once again was the top scorer for the American side with 19 points while Foluke Akinradewo contributed 14, including a match-high five blocks. Jordan Larson and Christa Harmotto chipped in with 9 apiece to the victory.

Neriman Ozsoy and Neslihan Darnel had 14 and 11 points for Turkey while Busra Cansu notched 9.

Turkey started strongly with Neslihan Darnel and Neriman Ozsoy attacking well. Turkey were leading 10-5 before USA coach Hugh McCutcheon called his first timeout.

USA has conquered the group B, so Hugh McCutcheon’s team will play the Dominican Republic in the quarter-final.

Brazil 3 – 0 Serbia

Top scorers: Thaisa M. 14, Sheila C. 12, Fabiana C. 10; I. Djerisilo 11, N. Krsmanovic 10, J. Brakocevic 6

Brazil overcome Serbia 3-0 (25-10, 25-22, 25-16) the last match of the preliminary round of the Olympic women’s volleyball tournament at Earls Court and qualified to the quarter-finals.

As expected, the defending champion has already taken control of the game at the beginning and has given it until the end. Serbia was not able to withstand its opponent just as it took place in all previous meetings.

Brazil totally dominated the net scoring 13 points in block while Serbia made only 2.

Thaisa Menezes paced Brazil with 14 points, including a match-high five blocks while Sheilla Castro finished with 12 points and four serving aces. Fabiana Claudino had four blocks among her 10 points and Jaqueline Carvalho chipped in with 10 tallies.

Ivana Djerisilo had 11 points and Brankica Mihajlovic added 10 for Serbia.
