Thanksgiving Travel Snarled By Winter Weather; Flights Impacted

Severe winter weather that made its way to the Northeastern U.S. on Thanksgiving weekend disrupted travel plans for many returning home after the holiday. According to the National Weather Service, the storm was creating blizzard conditions over parts of the Upper Midwest to strong thunderstorms across the Southeast and from parts of New York to southern Maine, snowfall totals of eight to 16 inches are in the forecast.

The weather service also warned that from the eastern Dakotas to Northern Michigan, potential snowfall totals of eight to 12 inches are possible. Ice is forecast to accumulate in parts of Maryland and Pennsylvania.

As the storm hit on a busy travel weekend, major airlines canceled a number of flights and issued travel waivers so passengers would not have to pay fees for any flight changes due to the severe weather.

From Saturday into Sunday morning, Delta said it had canceled about 160 flights and the airline said more cancelations are possible. United Airlines said it had canceled 26 flights at Newark Airport.

The Federal Aviation Administration was reporting severe delays at major airports on the East Coast, including at Newark Liberty International Airport where the average delay as of this writing was two hours and 33 minutes. At Laguardia Airport, the average delay was just over an hour and at Philadelphia International Airport, the average delay was close to two hours.

According to the website FlightAware, over 500 cancellations had been reported into, within or out of the United States and over 2,700 delays were reported.

There were also dozens of delays at airports in Chicago and Minneapolis. At Denver International Airport, 100 flights were canceled Saturday because of high winds.

The same weather system has been pummeling the U.S. for days as it moves cross country, dumping heavy snow from parts of California to the northern Midwest and inundating other areas with rain.
