Dimitris Avromopoulos: Italy migration crisis ‘unbearable’
About 85,000 migrants arrived on Italy’s shores in the first half of this year.
The EU must intensify its efforts to help Italy deal with the influx of refugees entering the country, the European Commissioner for Migration Dimitris Avromopoulos said ahead of a Thursday meeting of the bloc’s interior ministers in Tallinn.
“The situation by now is unbearable,” Avromopoulos told Germany’s Welt in an interview published Thursday. “Now we need the solidarity for the Italians from all member states of the European Union.”
In the first half of 2017, about 85,000 migrants arrived on Italy’s shores, versus 71,000 for the same period last year, according to the International Organization for Migration.
The country has threatened to close its ports to foreign ships and called on Brussels to do more to help.
The European Commission responded by unveiling an action plan on migration earlier this week.
