The United States and North Korea have agreed to a first meeting of their respective leaders and announced plans for talks that could, in a best-case outcome, bring peace and security to north-east Asia. History suggests, however, that numerous hurdles still need to be overcome – and many of them are very high.

The six-party talks were the last time that senior diplomats representing the US and North Korean governments sat down for face-to-face discussions, but those protracted deliberations – which also involved South Korea, Japan, Russia and China – eventually broke down amid accusations of bad-faith among many of the players.
