More than five years after his first reign with the title began, Finn Balor is once again NXT Champion.
Balor defeated Adam Cole on tonight’s Super Tuesday II edition of NXT to win the NXT Championship. Tonight’s match was set up after a four-way 60-minute Iron Man match with Balor, Cole, Johnny Gargano, and Tommaso Ciampa for the title on Super Tuesday I ended in a two-way tie between Balor and Cole.
Balor got the win against Cole tonight after hitting a 1916 DDT off the top rope.
Balor was greeted by Triple H and William Regal backstage after his win. Balor and Cole shook hands and gave each other a Too Sweet. Balor also cut a brief promo about the title being the reason he came back to NXT.
Triple H tweeted tonight: “Through different eras, a changing brand, and bringing @WWENXT to places it’s never been before … and where it’s going next…@FinnBalor IS #WWENXT. Congratulations!!! #NXTSuperTuesday”
In last week’s Iron Man match, Balor took the lead by pinning Ciampa with less than 20 seconds left. It appeared that Balor had the match won, but Cole hit the Last Shot on Balor and pinned him just before time expired.
The NXT Championship was declared vacant two weeks ago when Karrion Kross had to relinquish the title due to injury. Just days before that, Kross defeated Keith Lee for the NXT Championship in the main event of TakeOver XXX but suffered a separated shoulder during the match.
Balor vs. Cole was a matchup of the two longest reigning NXT Champions in history. Balor held the title for 292 days in 2015-2016. Cole held the title for 403 days (as recognized by WWE) from 2019-2020.
