Harvard Just Honored Rihanna in a Big Way

Rihanna is inarguably one of the world’s biggest superstars and she has used that power and influence for good through the establishment of her very own Clara Lionel Foundation. Her charitable work hasn’t gone unnoticed, as the Anti singer was just named Harvard University’s 2017 Humanitarian of the Year.

The Harvard Foundation’s director and neuroscience professor S. Allen Counter lauded Rihanna for her philanthropic efforts. “Rihanna has charitably built a state-of-the-art center for oncology and nuclear medicine to diagnose and treat breast cancer at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Bridgetown, Barbados,” he stated. “She has also created the Clara and Lionel Foundation Scholarship Program [named for her grandmother and grandfather] for students attending college in the U.S. from Caribbean countries, and supports the Global Partnership for Education and Global Citizen Project, a multiyear campaign that will provide children with access to education in over 60 developing countries, giving priority to girls and those affected by lack of access to education in the world today.”

Rihanna joins the ranks of Malala Yousafzai, Ruby Dee, Kofi Annan, and Arthur Ashe, who have all received the Humanitarian of the Year distinction in the past. She will accept the award next week at the Boston school’s Sanders Theatre on Feb. 28 at 4 p.m. ET.
