Marisa Tomei and Julianne Moore Just Learned They Share the Same DNA

No wonder Julianne Moore and Marisa Tomei are such good friends!

The two women starred in Crazy, Stupid Love together and attended Boston University at the same time in the early ’80s. And according to the PBS genealogy show, Finding Your Roots, their connection might go even further back.

In a video Moore, 58, posted to her Instagram, Tomei, 54, is a guest on the show and learns from host Henry Louis Gates that she and the Still Alice star share “an identical stretch of DNA” on Tomei’s X chromosome.

“Julianne? Julie?” the My Cousin Vinny actress exclaims to Gates when she finds out that they are genetic cousins. “You know we went to school together? Jules! Oh, I can’t wait to tell her!”

Perhaps the most entertaining part of PBS’ discovery, though, is how little sense it makes. Moore doesn’t have any Italian heritage, Gates explains, and all of Tomei’s ancestors that researchers found had roots in Italy.

This isn’t the first crazy discovery Gates has gotten to share with a guest.

On the season 4 premiere, Bernie Sanders and Larry David, the actor who flawlessly portrayed him on Saturday Night Live, learned that they’re distant cousins.

A clip showed both Sanders and David flipping a page to find a picture of their newly uncovered relative: each other.

“I hope it’s a good athlete,” the Curb Your Enthusiasm star joked before seeing Sanders’ photo.

“What the hell?” David said with a smile upon seeing that it was the politician, amazed to find out about “Cousin Bernie.”

Sanders reacted with the same joyful surprise.

“You’re kidding!” he exclaimed, putting his hand to his forehead. “That is unbelievable!”

Sanders added, “People say to me, they talk about Larry David, and I say, ‘He does a better Bernie Sanders than I do.’ ”
