New England’s True Wins BAA 5K

Call it the Tri-fecta for N. Yarmouth, Maine’s Ben True, 25.

The former Dartmouth College age started his season with a second place showing in the US 15K Championship and then led the US men at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships.

The day before the Boston Marathon, on a cold and windy day with misting rain, True and a large pack of contenders went through the first mile of the BAA 5K in 4:40.

Things separated dramatically as the second mile passed in 9:20.

Turning off Hereford and onto Boylston St. it was Kenya’s John Korir, Villanova ace Bobby Curtis and True.

Finding another gear some 200m out, True surged to cross the line first in 14:07, breaking the course record of 14:29 set by Natick, MA native Jarrod Shoemaker.

The women’s race was won wire-to-wire by Kenya’s Lineth Chepkuri in 15:52, also a course record. Both Chepkuri and True collected $5,000.
