Md. governor candidate arrested at immigrants’ rights rally

A Democratic candidate for governor in Maryland was arrested on Tuesday during an immigration rights rally outside of the White House.

A spokesperson for Ben Jealous told CBS Baltimore that Jealous was arrested after taking part in a rally marking the fifth anniversary of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.

“His actions today are consistent with his life-long work as a civil rights leader and community organizer, including his efforts to steer passage of the Maryland Dream Act,” spokesperson Kevin Harris told the news affiliate.

Jealous, a former president of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), announced his bid for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination in May.

About 30 protesters were arrested Tuesday outside of the White House, including Rep. Luis Gutiérrez (D-Ill.).
